2008 Electrolux Design Competition - Home appliances for Internet generation

Title of Design concept : Drawer Kitchen

Preface
Design concept is started from the place where I live now.
There are many types of lifestyles in Japan.
If internet generation have to be picked up among them, person in one room is suitable.
Because they use internet more than other people.
The reason of this phenomenon is based on their surroundings.

1. Earthquake
- Earthquake(over 5.5) frequency per year

- Earthquake(over 5.5) frequency per land scale (380000 km2)

* World Development Indicators 2004

2. High Density of Tokyo
Size : 2187 km2
Population :12790000 persons
Population density : 5797

3. Regulations about building height
a. Right to enjoy sunshine : If your building disturb the sunshine of other’s during specified time,
you have to pay for that by the law. b. Street oblique regulation : You can’t make your building
higher than result of calculation which is related with street breadth. c. North side oblique regulation :
You can’t make your building higher than result of calculation which is related with north side oblique.

* Japanese construction regulation

4. Low and small
Because of earthquake, high density, regulations, it’s hard to make building high.
Therefore Japanese can not help dividing space small.
So actual space is far more smaller than population density number.

Typical scenary of residential district. It’s hard to see tall building.

▲ From Tokyo Tower.

▲ Tokyo (Population density : 5797)

▲ Newyork (Population density : 17108)

Despite population density, Tokyo is denser than Newyork.

5. Houses in Japan
When explain Japanese house, people use one number and three initials.
Number : Number of rooms
L : Living room
D : Dining room
K : Kitchen
There are many types of houses.
1DK : 40m2, 70000~100000 Y/month
1LDK : 50m2, 100000~140000 Y/month
3LDK : 65m2, more expensive
Etc.
But 1Room is just one room. it’s cheaper and smaller than other houses.
Its size is about 16~20m2 and 40000~70000 yen/month. Because of small space,
user can’t put many furnitures. So, desk is not only a desk, but also a dining table.
Bed is not only a bed, but also a sofa.

* Exterior and interior of 1Room

6. Person in 1room
Salary
Their age is usually 20~30s, independence from parents, live alone until marriage.
In Japan, best case in salary after graduation is entering the big company such as
Nikon, Sony, etc. Its salary level is about 200000Y/month. With this salary,
it is hard to rent 1DK, 2DK, 3LDK...Only 1Room is OK.
Dietary life
They go out in the morning and come back in the night.
Therefore almost never make a meal in the house. If they do, it’ll be a simple one.
Instead of making food, they buy “ready-made” food or instant food.
Supermarket in Japan has a lot of high quality “ready-made” food.
What is more is there is almost 50% discount in closing time. In addition,
if they buy ingredients for making meal, they don’t eat more than one portion.
The rest is left alone and go bad easily.
Hobby
Their spare time is usually night. Doing something in this time is restrictive.
Therefore people doing something which they can do alone such as pachinko,
game, manga, DVD(movie, animation), and internet.
